New immigrants made up 61% of Canada’s population growth

A new report of Statistics Canada has revealed that immigration to Canada proved to be the main driver of population growth in the country in 2018. According to the report, new immigrants made up 61% of Canada’s population growth in the year. On January 1, 2019, the total population of Canada touched 37,314,442 that included a total increase of 321,065 new immigrants in 2018.

The population of Canada grew by over half a million in 2018. International migration contributed 80.5 percent of this growth. It means out of the total increase of 528,421 people in 2018, a total of 425,245 people were new immigrants and temporary residents. The number of people added to the Canadian population by immigration was much higher than the number of people added through natural growth or births minus deaths in 2018. The number of people added by natural growth was mere 103,176.

The fourth quarter of 2018 witnessed a record increase in the number of new immigrants. The Statistics Canada report also shows that the fourth quarter marked a population growth bump, which is unusual, as usually, population growth comes down during this period owing to seasonal patterns.

The initiatives of the Government of Canada introduced in recent years to improve the immigration system have significantly contributed towards the growth in international immigration to Canada. A major improvement was the introduction of the Express Entry system in 2015. A record-breaking 89,800 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for Canadian permanent residence were issued through the Express Entry system in 2018.

Another major feature of the Canada Immigration System is the provincial nominee programs. According to a Statistics Canada report, international migration was the main driver behind population growth in 9 out of 10 Canadian provinces in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Canada is planning to increase the intake of new immigrants in the coming three years, as per the new Immigration Levels Plan of the country for 2019-2021. Through immigration, Canada aims to attract international talents to overcome labor market shortages in the country.
