How can I Apply for Canadian Citizenship?

In order to apply for citizenship, you should first meet particular eligibility criteria and later submit an application.

Eligibility Criteria

For Canadian citizenship, you should:

  1. Submit evidence which proves that you know how to speak/write in one of Canada’s official languages i.e. either English or French.
  2. Be a Permanent Resident of Canada
  3. Be in Canada as a Permanent Resident (PR) for at least 1,095 days out of the five years before your application
  4. Have filed your taxes for a minimum of 3 years in the past five years and any income tax you should have paid

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will surely reject your application if you do not submit proper evidence that you got enough knowledge of English or French.

If you happen to be a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, you are considered to be qualified for a fast-track application process.

The applicant can be either a Canadian citizen or apply to so as to become a Canadian citizen while minors need not meet the residency requirement.

If your parents are Canadian citizens when you were born then you are already a citizen.

To become a Canadian citizen, you should apply for proof of citizenship.

If you have spent time in prison or on probation or parole, then you will not be eligible to be a Canadian citizen.

Even if you are serving a conditional sentence, you are not qualified to be a Canadian citizen. If you are under a deportation order, then you cannot apply for Canadian citizenship.

Application Process:

  1. Download and submit the forms in the Canadian Citizen Application Package.
  2. Make sure you include all supporting documents.
  3. Don’t forget to pay for the application fee.
  4. Send your application with the help of mail to the Centralized Intake Office (CIO) in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Do I need to write the test?

If your application is approved, then you need to write a citizenship test.

Children with age below 18 years and adults with age 54 or above need not need write the citizenship test.

Why am I asked to provide fingerprints?

You may be asked to provide fingerprints or in rare case scenario court documents when you are applying for citizenship. This is to make sure that you are not prohibited through the Citizenship Act.
