Health Canada changed the names of the vaccines
Health Canada has made brand name changes for the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines. As of now, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is renamed to Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty, the name of the Moderna vaccine has been changed to Moderna Spikevax, and the AstraZeneca vaccine will be named AstraZeneca Vaxzevria. To note, only the names of the vaccines have been changed. There are no changes to the vaccines themselves. All three COVID-19 vaccines were authorized for use in Canada under the Interim Order which expired on September 16, 2021. On this date, Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty and Moderna Spikevax transitioned to an authorization under the Food and Drug Regulations, while AstraZeneca Vaxzevria is under review for transition.

Supreme Court of Canada will review the appeal of refugees regarding the cancellation of the ‘Safe Third Country Agreement’
Refugees and their lawyers want to challenge Canada’s right to deny asylum to those arriving from the United States. The ‘Safe Third Country Agreement’ signed in 2004 is considered to violate Canada’s own charter of human rights, as it returns asylum-seekers to the US, where they are usually imprisoned by the authorities, often under inhumane conditions. The Federal Court of Appeal rejected the refugees’ claim earlier this year, and the new appeal will now be heard by the Supreme Court.

Quebec skill workers can now apply for the bridging open work permit
On September 16, 2021, the Government of Canada updated guidance for the bridging open work permit (BOWP) applications. Now, foreign nationals under the Quebec skilled worker class (QSWC) can apply for BOWP if they have passed a completeness check under section 10 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR) and meet other eligibility requirements. Quebec will be responsible for the selection of applicants, while IRCC will be responsible for determining admissibility. Applicants selected by the province will be issued a Certificat de selection du Quebec (CSQ). In addition, the Government has made clarifications to the Agri-Food Pilot (AFP) section. Applicants must submit their BOWP applications for the AFP online and provide their approval in principle letter in the ‘Client Information’ field with their work permit online application.

The Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program in Newfoundland and Labrador will be permanent
On September 16, 2021, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced that Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) is anticipated to become permanent on March 5, 2022. The Pilot Program was launched in 2017 and is in effect until December 31, 2021. The Federal and Provincial Governments are in the process of finalizing the details of the permanent Atlantic Immigration Program. Employers willing to continue availing of immigration as a means of addressing workforce shortages, and of building and growing local businesses are required to update their designation application under the permanent program.
