Statistics Canada’s new study compares the hospitalization rates of immigrants and the Canadian-born population

On September 15, 2021, Statistics Canada released a study comparing the rate of all-cause hospitalization among immigrants with that of their Canadian-born counterparts. Despite the heterogeneity in hospitalization rates within the immigrant population, the results demonstrated a healthy immigrant effect, since immigrants typically arrive in good health. According to the report, the overall age-standardized hospitalization rates among immigrants were lower than those of the Canadian-born population. Hospitalization rates were lowest in the economic class, followed by the family class and then refugees.

The Federal Court orders IRCC to pay compensation for 2 applicants

On August 26, 2021, the Federal Court of Canada ordered Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to pay $2,500 to the applicant, Mr. Charles Obafemi who applied for a work permit and visitor visa in Nigeria on September 13, 2019, to join his wife in Canada. Due to an error made by the visa officer, an unnecessary delay occurred and prevented the applicant to join his wife in Canada for far too long. The court ordered IRCC to process Mr. Obafemi’s application on a high priority basis. In addition, on August 27, 2021, the Court also ordered IRCC to pay a compensation of $62,040 to David Alfonzo Blanco Carrero, a Quebec Skilled Worker whose permanent residence (PR) has been processed by IRCC for almost a decade because of officer mistakes that now prevents the applicant get a PR as the application was impacted by the 2019 Quebec CSQ cancellation law.

Employment increased in Manitoba in July

According to the Labour Market Bulletin prepared by the Government of Canada, which analyzed Labour Force Survey results of Manitoba, employment in the province increased in July, up 7,400 to 654,800. The analysis highlights some occupations that have increased in demand in the province due to the pandemic. In addition, in July, the unemployment rate fell 1.5 percentage points to 6.1% – the lowest since the start of the pandemic in March 2020 (6.7%). However, many jobs in the tourism and hospitality sectors were negatively impacted because of Manitoba’s public health measures and pandemic-related shutdowns.
