Canada to allow some additional categories of foreign nationals to travel to Canada

On October 2, 2020, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) released a new update regarding travel restrictions and exemptions amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The government will allow some extended family members of Canadians (including permanent residents) to come to Canada. These relatives are spouses, dependent children, adult children, siblings, and grandparents. Some foreign nationals can also come to Canada on the ground of a compassionate reason in specific circumstances such as a funeral, illness, or death. In addition, on October 20, IRCC will allow international students, whose college or university has a COVID‑19 readiness plan in place to travel to Canada. All personal self-isolation measures to all travellers also remain in place. On October 8, IRCC will release more details on how to obtain a written travelling authorization.

IRCC extended regulations on the processing of TRVs and eTAs.

On October 1, 2020, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada received updated Ministerial Instructions (MIs) for temporary residence applications. Minister Marco Mendicino has extended the temporary regulations on processing temporary resident visa applications and electronic travel authorizations until January 31, 2021. In addition, new MIs now include new exemptions on the requirement to submit a temporary residence application electronically. IRCC will continue to take priority for those eligible to travel under current travel restrictions. This includes both new applications and applications under review. All regular eligibility requirements for the TRV application must also be met.

IRCC will send initial work and study permits by mail to those who are in Canada

On October 1, 2020, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the new instructions for foreign nationals in Canada who received a Letter of Introduction on their applications for study and work permits outside of Canada. Due to COVID-19 measures, flag polling remains prohibited, so IRCC will issue work and study permits on request of the foreign national done online. IRCC clarified the four-step guidance on how to make a request with the specific wording of such requests. These measures also have an effect on foreign youth who have a Port of Entry Letter in the Internationals Experience Canada program. In this way, they can finally activate their work permits.
