The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) introduced new residency requirements for Alberta Opportunity Stream applicants. Immigration increased Canada’s population to 38,929,902

According to the Statistics Canada data published on September 28, 2022, Canada’s population has increased to 38,929,902 people. The population of Canada increased from 33,476,688 to 38,929,902 within a decade ago. In just the second quarter of 2022, 118,114 new immigrants arrived in Canada – the highest figure on record. This trend shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, with 157,310 new non-permanent residents arriving in 2022.

Five Canadian provinces continue to keep immigration detainees in provincial prisons

The government of Canada has been detaining migrants in Canadian provincial jails as part of its border security measures. Under agreements with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), five Canadian provinces – Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Alberta, and Saskatchewan continue to keep immigrants in their provincial prisons. According to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), migrants can be kept in provincial jails even if they are not accused of a crime. In mid-September, Nova Scotia announced it would not renew its deal with the CBSA.
