Human Rights Watch campaign on immigration detention

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has launched a ‘Welcome to Canada’ campaign focused on immigration detention in provincial prisons. The campaign focuses on detainees in provincial jails. Every year, Canada incarcerates thousands of immigration detainees, including refugee claimants and other immigrants. They are detained in some of the most restrictive conditions of confinement, including in maximum-security provincial jails and solitary confinement. They are asking the Canadian Government to stop holding immigration detainees in jails and to abolish immigration detention as a practice.

Ontario to tighten rules for agencies and firms that recruit foreign workers

The Government of Ontario is set to bring in the province’s strictest-ever rules for companies that recruit temporary workers, including a system for shutting down recruitment agencies that exploit staff. The Ministry of Labour announced the plans that include mandatory licensing for temporary help agencies, giving the province the power to stop firms from operating if they violate employment standards. The province will also build a team of inspectors to reveal and address the illegal treatment of workers and help recover unpaid wages.
