Canada closed the International Experience Canada Program for 2021
On November 12, 2021, the Government of Canada closed the International Experience Canada (IEC) Program for the 2021 season, not holding the final round of invitations. Applicants who received an Invitation to Apply (ITA) can still complete and submit their work permit applications. Those who did not receive an ITA can create a new profile when the Government re-opens pools for the next season, using their current accounts and GCkey. In 2021, Canada issued 30,372 ITAs under the IEC Program.

COVID-19 decreased the immigration flows in OECD countries
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly declined immigration into Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, including Canada. On October 28, 2021, the organization published an annual report indicating that “much of the progress in migrant integration achieved over the past decade wiped out in just one year in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.” The number of permanent migrants decreased more than 30% in 2020. This means about 3.7 million fewer people – the lowest level in OECD countries since 2003.

Canadian population support the government’s immigration policies
Canadians are largely positive and supportive of the Government’s policies on immigrants and refugees. They believe immigrants are making a positive contribution to the country and help build the country’s population. According to the survey conducted by the Environics Institute between September 7 and 23, 2021, the overwhelming majority of the population supports current levels of immigration, views immigrants as good for the Canadian economy. This opinion was stable over the past 12 months. There is also clear public support for the Government’s decision to accept 20,000 Afghan refugees fleeing the Taliban.

Canadian cities come out of the COVID-19 pandemic
According to the latest Labour Market Report Card conducted by the Bank of Montreal, Canadian cities continue to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. The report introduced the top ten Canadian cities for unemployed individuals to get a job. Ontario dominated the list since 5 out of 10 cities are in this province. As the report indicated, the best cities for employment are Peterborough (ON), Vancouver (BC), Guelph (ON), Edmonton (AB), Kitchener (ON), Victoria (BC), Moncton (NB), Sherbrooke (QC), Ottawa (ON), and Hamilton (ON).
