Canada inaugurated the new Centre for Innovation in Francophone Immigration
On November 10, 2022, the Government of Canada inaugurated the new Centre for Innovation in Francophone Immigration in Dieppe as part of National Francophone Immigration Week. The centre, being the first Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) office in southeastern New Brunswick, will help make immigration programs more accessible for French-speaking candidates, conduct case studies to meet the bilingual workforce needs of Francophone employers and communities, and support international promotion efforts to recruit French-speaking candidates. The Government of Canada has set a budget of $12.9 million over the next four years to establish the Dieppe centre, with an additional yearly investment of $5.6 million afterwards to ensure the program’s effectiveness.

French-Speaking Immigrants outside Quebec feel welcomed across Canada
Thousands of French-speaking immigrants are welcomed by native French speakers in Canada. Although Quebec remains a French-speaking province, New Brunswick is home to the largest Francophone population in Canada outside of Quebec. In addition, 4% of Manitoba and Ontario’s populations are composed of native French speakers. As more French speakers enter Canada, settlement programs support their integration into communities outside of traditionally French-speaking Quebec. Programs provide newcomers with information and support in housing, banking, transit, etc.

Canada succeeded in decreasing the immigration backlog
According to data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the immigration backlog has decreased to just over 2.4 million. Applications for temporary residence have gone down significantly, while the number of permanent residence applications has slightly increased. The IRCC webpage that tracks the inventory of applications across all lines of business reported 2.6 million applications as of September 30. Out of the 2.6 million immigration applications, 1.1 were within service standards, and 1.5 million were backlogged. This demonstrates that IRCC made some progress in reducing the backlog over the past month.

Nova Scotia introduced a new action plan to increase Francophone immigration
With a new action plan, Nova Scotia is working to attract more francophone immigrants to the province. The provincial government’s goal is to increase francophone immigration to at least 4.4 percent of total immigration. The province’s plan, Growing Nova Scotia’s Francophone Population – An Action Plan for Success (2022-25), attempts to engage more communities and partners in francophone immigration, attract more francophone immigrants with marketing efforts, undertake programs to encourage population growth, better retain newcomers through services that facilitate settlement, and put in place research and evaluation programs.
