Canada updated instructions for the Safe Third Country Agreement

On May 4, 2023, the Government of Canada published updated instructions for the Safe Third Country Agreement. Effective March 25, 2023, the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA) has been extended to cover the entire land border through the implementation of the Additional Protocol (AP). The AP, together with corresponding regulatory amendments, expands the application of the STCA to include individuals who submit an asylum claim when entering Canada between ports of entry, as well as those who submit a refugee claim inland following an irregular entry.

The SINP invited 1,032 candidates under the Express Entry and Occupations In-Demand categories

On May 3, 2023, Saskatchewan conducted new rounds of invitations in the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP). In the Express Entry category, Saskatchewan issued 739 ITAs. Another 293 invitations were issued to the Occupations In-Demand category candidates. The lowest score in both categories was 68, one point fewer than in the previous draws. All invited candidates had Educational Credential Assessments. In this draw, Saskatchewan invited 1,032 candidates under 32 different NOCs. In 2023, Saskatchewan invited 3,154 skilled immigrants and entrepreneurs in five draws under the SINP.

Immigration Minister waived application fees for family members of Canadians who fled Sudan

On May 4, 2023, the Government of Canada announced that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) application fees for foreign nationals who fled Sudan with their Canadian family members – including Canadian citizens and permanent residents. After arriving in Canada, Sudanese nationals can apply for an open work or study permit and permanent residence under the family class without paying the processing fee. Applicants seeking to enter Canada will continue to be subject to all other legal requirements and admissibility criteria.

Saskatchewan invited 34 candidates under the Entrepreneur Program

On May 4, 2023, the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) conducted the third invitation round in the Entrepreneur Program 2023 and invited 34 entrepreneurs. This round’s highest Expression of Interest (EOI) score was 125 points. The average score was 105 points. The lowest score was 100. The province will conduct the next EOI pool selections on July 6, 2023, September 7, 2023, and November 2, 2023. According to the new update, candidates cannot change their business plans after applying to the program. They also cannot change their Business Performance Agreement after the SINP approval. In 2023, Saskatchewan invited 3,154 candidates under all streams, including 138 entrepreneurs.
