Ottawa updates the abandonment procedures

On May 30, 2022, the Government of Canada published a new update regarding the abandonment procedures to be invoked following non‑compliance following email communication. The Government has provided a number of decision-making tools and examples to minimize the likelihood of extended delays in processing. With the consultation of the Client Support Centre (CSC) and Centralized Network (CN), instructions and guidelines were updated, clarifying who is responsible for decision-making after an application has been abandoned. In addition, starting from April 12, 2021, the Government is allowed to use abandonment procedures without the need to re‑send all correspondence via physical mail if an event invitation or request for documents is sent to an applicant by email.

IRCC works with Quebec to increase Francophone immigration to the province

The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has committed to working with the province of Quebec to attract more French-speaking immigrants as the province braces itself for a significant rise in immigration this year to make up for the losses during the Covid-19 epidemic. Trudeau’s backing for immigration to the French-speaking province comes as it prepares to accept 71,275 new permanent residents this year, far more than the 50,285 who arrived in the province last year. If the government reaches its goal, Quebec would receive a 41.7 percent boost in immigration – which it hopes will be a one-time occurrence to compensate for the decline in immigration to the province in 2020.
