Immigration Canada increased the staff to process overseas sponsorship applications
On March 5, 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the expansion of the staff in the Sydney Case Processing Centre. The IRCC’s office in Nova Scotia will hire 62 new case managers. This staffing increase is aimed at the facilitation of the processing of family unification applications, namely outland spousal and children sponsorship and reducing processing times. This increase is planned for 1 year to eliminate all backlogs. In 2022, IRCC will re-evaluate its needs. In 2020, Canada welcomed 36,025 sponsored spouses. This year, IRCC hopes to admit 80,000 sponsored spouses.

Newfoundland and Labrador released a new FAQ for NLPNP
On March 4, 2021, Newfoundland and Labrador released a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador during the COVID-19. The document outlines questions related to the work Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism, Settlement and Integration Programs, the impact of the federal restrictions for employers, foreign workers, international students, and international graduates. The list includes about two dozens questions and answers.

Mid-level managers are important in creating teams with immigrant participation in the workplace.
A new report released by the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC) shows that one group that invests in creating or retaining immigrant groups in the workplace is mid-level managers. This report shows that while engagement begins with leadership, the selection and daily actions of middle managers pave the way for immigrant professionals to realize their full potential. This group has a significant influence on what happens after an immigrant is hired, if they feel part of their team if they provide the necessary feedback for the development and, ultimately, the degree of progress of the immigrant organization. Diversity and inclusion are not enough, says the report. Efforts by mid-level managers to attract immigrants are more likely to be successful if they are tied to the goals of the organization.

The number of approved PR applications in caregiver pilots plummeted in 2020
According to the official data by IRCC, in 2020, Canada approved 913 applications for permanent residence in the Home Child Care Provider Pilot (HCP), 260 applications in the Home Support Worker Pilot (HSW) and 1,173 applications in the Interim Pathway for Caregivers. These numbers have been seriously affected by the COVID-19. For instance, in 2019, IRCC approved 2,280 HCP applications and 753 HSW cases. Additionally, IRCC finalized another 9,024 PR applications in the Interim Pathway for Caregivers. This program was closed on October 8, 2019. Overall, this situation is disturbing as many Canadians require the help of caregivers. At the same time, during the COVID-19 quarantine, many working Canadians were forced to stay at home and this temporarily reduced the demand for caregivers.
