Canadian labour market recovers as pandemic-related as health measures lifted in several provinces

On March 11, 2022, Statistics Canada published Labour Force Survey results that indicate the recovery of the Canadian labour market. According to the report, in February, employment climbed 337,000 (+1.8%), and the unemployment rate dropped 1.0 percentage points to 5.5%. This indicator is lower than in February 2020 (5.7%) and close to the record low (5.4%) observed in May 2019. The increase in the employment rates was widespread across provinces and demographic groups and was most notable in the accommodation and food services, information, culture, and recreation industries.

The Government of Canada to spend $117M on special immigration measures for Ukrainian refugees

On March 10, 2022, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in a news conference that the Government planned to spend $117 million for special immigration measures to arrange the arrival of Ukrainians in Canada. In addition to that, the Government of Canada will provide more humanitarian aid to Ukraine in response to Russia’s invasion. Canada will also triple the amount of donation to the Canadian Red Cross’ Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal, increasing it from $10 million up to $30 million.

IELTS exam centers will be closed in Russia

Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the IELTS exam centers are going to be closed in Russia. It is considered to be one of the world’s most popular English language tests that has more than three million users in the past year. Russian candidates who plan to take an IELTS test will have to travel to another country to get the exam and fulfill the English language proficiency requirements. Prospective students and immigrants to Canada can still take the CELPIP exam when applying for a Canadian visa or permanent residency (PR).

Canadian educational institutions help Afghan refugees obtain higher education

Canadian universities and colleges help refugees from Afghanistan acquire post-secondary or training programs. Refugees who want to attend Canadian educational institutions receive aid in some communities on their tuition, living expenses, books, and even laptop computers and tablets. Immigration Minister Sean Fraser tweeted that “to help provide Afghan refugees with the skills to succeed, our country’s colleges and universities are helping break down financial barriers faced by many Afghan newcomers.” So far, Canada has accepted more than 9,400 Afghan nationals under the special human rights defenders immigration stream.
