Atlantic Premiers has discussed regional priorities

On March 21, 2022, Atlantic Premiers – Tim Houston, Premier of Nova Scotia, Blaine Higgs, Dennis King, and Andrew Furey met to discuss regional priorities to health care, economic recovery, cost of living, and immigration. They have also met with Sean Fraser, federal Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC), condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and expressing their solidarity with Ukraine. Premiers also discussed the successful Atlantic Immigration Program. Heads of provinces also stated that they would further develop partnerships with the Federal Government in areas such as immigration, labour market, workforce development, etc.

Immigration Minister answered questions of PGWP-holders

Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) answered questions of post-graduate work permit (PGWP) holders in an online meeting. Minister stated that there is a huge number of people who have completed their studies and have a PGWP. Many of these foreign nationals feel insecure since their PGWPs are expiring, and they have not been able to apply for permanent residency (PR) yet. The Minister explained that IRCC is looking for different options to make sure not to lose these candidates as the Government tries to keep these skilled candidates in Canada to tackle the labour shortages in the country.

Some Canadian provinces increase minimum wages

The Department of Employment and Social Development of Canada published information that from April 1, the minimum wage for federal employees will be increased from $15 to $15.55 per hour. This profit is received only by those working in the federal districts: banks, postal services, as well as inter-provincial public transport workers. In addition, starting from April 1, 2022, individuals living in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, and Nova Scotia will also receive increased minimum wages.

IRCC takes steps to restore Express Entry immigration pace

A new internal memo from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says the ministry has yet to decide on Express Entry plans for this year but invitations for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) candidates will resume “later in 2022.” The note also states that IRCC will extend the temporary pause in issuing invitations to FSWP, CEC, and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) candidates until March 31 while continuing to issue invitations under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
