International Experience Canada officially opened
On March 1, 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) officially opened the International Experience Canada program. Unfortunately, due to some technical difficulties, some IEC pools for the 2021 season did not open today. This was announced by IRCC on Twitter. In addition, COVID-19 has negatively impacted the Working Holiday category. Due to travel restrictions currently in place in Canada, all Working Holiday candidates must obtain a job offer from a Canadian employer in order to be invited to apply for an IEC work permit.

Canada admitted 106,425 economic immigrants in 2020
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), in 2020, Canada admitted 106,425 immigrants in the economic class. This number includes 66,025 immigrants under the Skilled Workers category, 38,710 provincial nominees, and 1,680 business immigrants. The impact of COVID-19 can be clearly observed if we compare those figures with 2019 when out of 196,655 economic immigrants, there were 123,295 skilled workers, 68,645 provincial nominees, and 4,720 business immigrants. According to the 2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada wants to attract 232,500 economic immigrants.

Pandemic spurs high demand for PSWs and DSWs
COVID-19 has spotlighted an urgent demand for Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and Development Services Workers (DSWs), spurring investment into the home and community care by the Ontario government as well as an increase in applications to personal support workers training programs. More than ever, this increased demand is leading to job opportunities for Canadians, especially among newcomers and immigrants for whom caring for others is often a strong component of their community. While the pandemic has created a focus on long-term care homes and seniors’ residences, an often overlooked yet rewarding opportunity for job seekers is working as a PSW, DSW or intervenor with individuals who have diverse abilities, to help them integrate and thrive within their communities.

Should we expect the repetition of February 13?
Several media recently conducted interviews with Canadian Minister of Immigration Marco Mendicino. He answered in detail a series of questions on how Canada will meet its immigration targets. Mendicino said the 27,000 invitations issued via Express Entry are just the beginning. In addition, last week, Mendicino mentioned on his Twitter that it is the best time for international students and foreign workers in Canada to expect to become Canadian citizens. One of the effects of the February 13 Express Entry draw was a significant increase in new registrations in the pool. In-Canada candidates who earlier did not register due to lower CRS points understood that they might have a chance under the current unusual conditions. In order to reach the immigration targets this year, IRCC will have to conduct a few more similar draws in the Express Entry.
