Fraser responded to reports concerning international student fraud

On June 13, 2023, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, made a statement concerning the reports of international student fraud. He said international students who are not found to be involved in immigration-related fraud will not be deported. Fraser said he directed the issuance of temporary resident permits (TRP) to foreign students who came to Canada intending to study and were unaware of the use of forged documents. The minister’s statement came after a group of Indian students in Canada were threatened with deportation for allegedly submitting fraudulent letters of acceptance. He urged applicants to make sure they do proper research and access the official website before applying for a study permit.
