Canada will welcome fully vaccinated travelers from all countries by early September

According to a readout published by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office, Canada can welcome fully vaccinated travelers from all countries by early September 2021. In addition, if the current positive path of vaccination rate and public health conditions continue, the Government will start allowing fully vaccinated US citizens and permanent residents into Canada as of mid-August for non-essential travel. Canada has been in ongoing discussions with the United States on reopening the shared land border plans, which have been closed since March 2020.

Canada’s new immigration stream for essential workers has reached its limit of 30,000

Canada’s immigration stream for English-speaking essential workers who do not work in healthcare-related positions has reached its limit of 30,000. This immigration stream is one of the six temporary residences to permanent residence (TR to PR) pathways. The quota was met on July 18, more than two months after the program was originally launched. After the international graduate’s stream, which was open for just 25 hours, it is the second program to fill up before the programs close on November 5. Interestingly, the last few thousand spots were filled only one day after IRCC announced the opportunity to apply for Bridging Open Work Permit for candidates under this program.

Canada announced a new stream for human rights defenders

On July 16, 2021, Marco Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the launch of a refugee stream dedicated to human rights defenders at risk who are fleeing persecution in their home country. Canada is going to be one of the first countries to offer a permanent pathway for human rights defenders and will resettle up to 250 human rights defenders and their family members every year, through the Government-Assisted Refugees Program. The Government of Canada will work with Canadian and international partners to identify human rights defenders who face security risks.

IRCC will modernize Canada’s immigration system

Marco Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (IRCC), has emphasized the need to modernize Canada’s immigration system so that future public health crises don’t threaten the economy the way COVID-19 did. He also highlighted the contributions of immigrants into the country and for the Canadian economy and the need for transformation and modernization of the system to accommodate the great demands that are placed on it. According to the Minister, the new system will be a “shift in the paradigm in the way we talk about immigration,” which will eliminate discriminatory practices like “ranking immigrants one against the other”.
