Canada stops accepting Ukrainian applicants under the CUAET
Starting July 16, 2023, Ukrainian nationals cannot apply for the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) visa. Instead, Ukrainian applicants can apply for a regular temporary resident visa to travel to Canada and then apply for an open work permit, study permit, or visitor record valid for up to 3 years upon arrival in Canada. Ukrainian nationals can apply for permits or extensions through regular IRCC channels with standard fees and receive a normal period of stay of up to six months. All applicants must meet eligibility and admissibility requirements and go through regular processing channels.

32,000+ tech workers attracted to Canada in 2022
Canada’s technology sector is experiencing significant growth, as evidenced by the 32,115 tech workers who immigrated in the past year. The Technology Councils of North America (TECNA) and Canada’s Tech Network (CTN) report on Tech Workforce Trends shows that this is partly due to the country’s immigration policies and cost advantages, which attract highly-skilled workers from across the globe. Ontario saw the most significant increase in tech workers, while smaller provinces such as Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador experienced the most rapid growth. Understanding migration trends is crucial to supporting the tech ecosystem and filling the gap in tech workers for available jobs.

Canada’s immigration rebounded in May after a slow April
Immigration to Canada increased by 55.1% in May 2023, with 45,825 new permanent residents. This follows a drop in immigration for three consecutive months, with April having the lowest performance rate. The monthly rate of immigration to Canada has now risen to slightly above what it was in March. Despite this increase, the total number of new permanent residents is still down 10% from January’s high of 50,910. If the current trend continues, Canada could expect to welcome 529,932 new permanent residents this year, surpassing its immigration target for this year and even for 2025. Ontario was the most popular destination for newcomers, attracting 44.4% of the total for Canada.

Ontario invests $2.6 million in job training for new Canadians
Ontario is investing $2.6M in free training programs for over 300 newcomers, including Afghan and Ukrainian refugees, to help them find good jobs in Canada. The province is also cracking down on temporary help agencies, exploiting foreign workers by paying them less than minimum wage and withholding their passports. The new law will require these agencies to get a license by Jan 1, 2024, and those who violate workers’ rights will face fines ranging from $100,000 to $200,000. Ontario’s Immigration Minister, Monte McNaughton, believes everyone must collaborate to build the Canadian dream.
