Canada introduced a new open work permit for recent permanent residency applicants
On July 15, 2021, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Marco Mendicino announced that starting from July 26, 2021, applicants of the recently opened pathway to permanent residence will be eligible for an open work permit while awaiting the results of their application. The new pathway to permanent residence was opened for 90,000 essential workers and international students who graduated from a Canadian institution on May 6, 2021. Applications for the new work permit will be accepted online. Additional details about the application process will be added to IRCC’s website on July 26, 2021. Open work permits issued under this policy will be valid until December 31, 2022.

Ontario issued invitations under the Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills Stream
On July 15, 2021, the Government of Ontario held a new draw in the Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills stream (EJO IDS) of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). The number of invitations to apply (ITAs) issued by the province has not yet been released. ITAs were issued to candidates with job offers from the healthcare, agricultural, and manufacturing sectors. In addition, in a separate draw, the OINP targeted candidates registered for the Regional Immigration Pilot. So far, OINP has issued invitations to 8,119 candidates under all streams of the OINP in 2021.

Canada will allow cruise ships to enter the country
On July 15, 2021, Canada’s transport minister Omar Alghabra announced that all cruise ships complying with the Government of Canada’s public health guidelines will be allowed to enter Canada as of November 1, 2021. On February 4, 2021, Canada suspended all cruise ships and Arctic pleasure craft into the country until February 28, 2022, to protect Canadians from COVID-19. Considering Canada’s improved coronavirus situation, the Government of Canada decided to lift the ban earlier than expected to assist the country’s hard-hit tourism sector.

Ottawa is going to help applicants with expired COPR
As applicants cannot travel to Canada on expired documents, the Government of Canada will help those who are outside Canada with expired or expiring Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) who couldn’t travel to Canada due to travel restrictions related to COVID-19. As of June 21, 2021, applicants are exempt from travel restrictions, no matter what date COPR was issued. However, if applicants have an expired COPR, they are not able to travel to Canada until new documents are reissued. Applicants with a COPR and permanent resident visa that are valid until October 1, 2021, are expected to come to Canada before their documents expire.
