OINP issued 122 nominations and got its 2022 quota allocation
On July 11, 2022, the province of Ontario released a new update on the issuance of nomination certificates under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development issued nominations to 122 foreign nationals, since the last update on June 28. In total, in 2022, Ontario issued nominations to 4,496 foreign nationals. Last year, the province nominated 8,600 candidates to apply for permanent residence with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). On the same day, the Federal government released the annual quota allocation for Ontario under the Provincial Nominee Program. In 2022, Ontario can nominate 9,750 nominees.

Canada introduced a new update regarding the bridging open work permits
On July 11, 2022, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) published a new program delivery update announcing new instructions for bridging open work permits (BOWP) for International Mobility Program (IMP) applicants. According to the new instructions, applicants must be authorized to work at the time of submission only. To be eligible for a BOWP, at the time of submission, a foreign national must have valid temporary resident status and work permit, have maintained status and authorization to work under paragraph 186(u) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR), and be eligible to restore their temporary resident status with authorization to work.

Ontario published new application processing times for the OINP
On July 11, 2022, Ontario updated the average processing time in the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). As of now, the processing time in Ontario’s Express Entry French-Speaking Skilled Worker Stream, Express Entry Human Capital Priorities Stream, and Express Entry Skilled Trades Stream is 70-100 days. The processing time for Ontario’s Master Graduates and Ph.D. Graduates Streams, Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills Stream, Employer Job Offer: Foreign Worker, and Employer Job Offer: International Student Stream is 90-120 days. The Expression of Interest (EOI) Assessment in the Entrepreneur Stream still requires less than 30 days, while the application processing depends on the complexity of the business nomination application.

Immigration Minister wants to successfully resettle Afghan refugees and Ukrainian newcomers
Canada has pledged to accept at least 40,000 Afghan refugees. Since August 2021, approximately 16,370 Afghans have arrived in Canada. The Government of Canada established the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) for Ukrainians fleeing the conflict in Ukraine. This allows Ukrainians to enter Canada for a limited time period. So far, since January 1, 2022, 55,488 Ukrainians have entered Canada. Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) stated that he wanted “to successfully resettle and make good on commitments to Afghan refugees and Ukrainians who are in search of safe haven.”

Canada’s Business Council says immigrants are vital to the Canadian economy
On June 24, 2022, the Business Council of Canada (BCC) released a study in which 80 Canadian companies were interviewed about how they utilized Canada’s immigration systems to recruit skilled employees. The businesses surveyed have more than 1.6 million people on their payrolls altogether. According to the survey results, about two-thirds of organizations used Canada’s immigration system to look for individuals outside the country. And only one-third hires people who have already settled in Canada as immigrants.
