Saskatchewan invited 50 candidates under the Entrepreneur Program
On January 5, 2023, the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) conducted the first invitation round in the Entrepreneur Program 2023. In this round, SINP invited 50 candidates. This round’s highest Expression of Interest (EOI) score was 130 points. The average score was 95 points. The lowest score was 80, and those applicants were invited to apply only if they scored a CLB level of 6 or higher in English or French. In 2022, Saskatchewan invited 10,903 candidates, including 325 entrepreneurs.

IRCC continues to approve applications of Ukrainians under the CUAET
On January 6, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated the number of Ukrainian newcomers arriving in Canada under the Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel (CUAET). According to the latest update, between January 1, 2022, and January 1, 2023, 20,256 Ukrainians arrived in Canada by land, and an additional 119,838 reached by air. Between March 17, 2022, and January 3, 2023, IRCC received 763,094 applications under the CUAET. In total, IRCC approved 478,357 applications from Ukrainian nationals.

Canada welcomed 28,345 Afghan nationals since August 2021
On January 6, 2023, the Government of Canada made a new update regarding the Afghan refugees arriving in the country. The last update shows Canada has accepted 1,130 Afghan refugees since December 23, 2022. As of now, Canada has welcomed a total of 28,345 Afghan refugees. In addition, Canada received 17,055 Afghans and their families’ applications under the Special Immigration Measures Program for Afghans who had assisted the Government of Canada in Afghanistan. Most of them – 9,505 Afghans arrived in Canada under that program, while 16,250 Afghan nationals came under the Humanitarian program. In addition, Canada admitted 1,045 applicants under the pathway for extended family members of former interpreters.

Statistics Canada published Labour Force Survey for December 2022
On January 6, 2023, Statistics Canada published Labour Force Survey for December 2022, revealing a positive shift in the Canadian job market, with 104,000 new jobs. There was a slight decline in the unemployment rate, lowering to 5.0%, just below the recent historic low of 4.9% observed in June and July! In addition, Canada’s employment rates saw a dramatic uptick across multiple age groups, with people aged 15 to 24 gaining 69,000 jobs (+2.7%) and those 55 or older earning an additional 31,000 positions. In December, employment rose in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Saskatchewan, meanwhile remaining relatively steady in the other provinces.
