Ottawa published a new update for Italian IEC applicants

On January 5, 2024, the Government of Canada published a new update regarding the participation eligibility requirements for Italian nationals participating under the International Experience Canada (IEC) program. As per the bilateral agreement between Italy and Canada, Italian citizens are required to submit a certified translation (in either English or French) of their “certificato di residenza” as evidence of their residence in Italy. In addition, the new update clarifies that applicants must reside in Italy at the time of their application to qualify for the IEC program.

Employment rate among immigrants in Canada increased in 2023

Statistics Canada published a new study exploring links between the employment rate of core working-age immigrants and the duration of their stay in Canada. The data highlights that immigrants with over ten years of stay had the highest employment rates, while recent arrivals (within the last five years) had the lowest. To be precise, employment rates were 77.8% for immigrants who landed five or fewer years ago, 81.9% for those who landed between 5 and 10 years ago, and 84.5% for those in Canada for over ten years. The overall employment rate for immigrants in 2023 was 82.6%, slightly lower than the 86.3% rate for Canadian-born individuals.

Canada: A Country Shaped by Immigrants

Canada’s population growth is largely driven by record immigration, says the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS) CEO, Jack Jedwab. A Leger poll suggests that in 30+ years, Canada’s population will double, with nearly half identifying as racialized or visible minorities. Changes in religious identification are anticipated, with Christianity losing its status as the majority religion. While 77% identified as Christians in 2001, this dropped to 53% in 2021. Atheism is rising, increasing from 16.5% to 34.6% in 2021. Temporary foreign workers, international students, and new permanent residents drove the fastest population growth in Q3 2023 since 1957. Canada’s population was estimated to be 40,528,396 on October 1, 2023, an increase of 430,635 from July 1.

IRCC sets new wage rules for employers recruiting temporary foreign workers

From January 1, 2024, employers recruiting through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) must adjust foreign workers’ wages to match updated prevailing rates, as per Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Although some employers are exempt, this usually requires a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Job Bank updates provincial wage differences annually. Canada is inviting foreign workers to boost its economy amid labour shortages, with potential losses of $38 billion due to shortages, as the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) reported. Foreign workers in Canada are legally entitled to the same rights as Canadians, with employers required to ensure a fair work environment and access to healthcare.
