Canada welcomed a record number of immigrants in 2022

On January 3, 2022, the Government of Canada announced a historic number of newcomers in 2022. Canada has reached its target of 431,645 new permanent residents in 2022. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) processed around 5.2 million permanent, temporary, and citizenship applications last year, doubling the number of applications processed in 2021. Immigration is Canada’s leading source of labour force growth, accounting for nearly all development. Additionally, immigration makes up 75% of Canada’s population increase and will make up approximately 30% by 2036, a drastic jump from 2011 when it accounted for only 20.7%.

Newfoundland And Labrador to accept more immigrants

As opposed to the rest of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy is predicted to experience rapid growth in 2023. To capitalize on this opportunity, they are relying on economic migration to fill these newly-created positions. According to TD Economics, Newfoundland and Labrador’s real GDP growth rate is anticipated to triple in 2023 from 0.4% to 1.2%, with an even greater increase expected for 2024. As a result, Newfoundland and Labrador is aiming to create more jobs in the province by increasing immigration levels to get the employees needed. This means that instead of 1,850 new immigrants settling into the province every year before Covid-19, the province will almost triple that number to 5,100 by 2026.

Canada is ranked as one of the top destinations to retire

Canada is an excellent place to retire, being ranked as the twenty-second best country in the world for those seeking a good life. The nation’s open immigration policies were identified as one of its greatest strengths; however, Canada has relatively high costs regarding eating out and housing – making this a potential pitfall. Those looking to Canada as a potential retirement location and with children or grandchildren who are already Canadian citizens should take special note of the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), which allows them to sponsor their loved ones for permanent residence.

PPC leader calls on the government to slow down immigration to Canada

Maxime Bernier, leader of the People’s Party of Canada (PPC), warns that Ottawa’s goal to bring in 500,000 new permanent residents by 2025 is unrealistic and unsustainable. The PPC leader proposes that Canada prioritize economic immigration to fill job vacancies and lower the number of refugees and extended family members, taking advantage of the Parents and Grandparents Program to avoid potentially damaging effects from immigration. The PPC received only 4.9 percent of the popular vote in the previous federal election and failed to elect any candidate for the House of Commons
