International students are a considerable part of the Canadian labour force

On January 18, 2022, Statistics Canada released a study, which examines the engagement of international students in the labour market through the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) after finishing their post-secondary education. The report states that the number of international students participating in the PGWPP after their studies have increased significantly. Under the PGWPP international graduates can work full-time, part-time, or be self-employed. The PGWPP has started in 2003 as a pilot program in some selected provinces, and then expanded nationwide in 2005.

In addition, the number of Canadians returning from abroad was almost eight times greater than in December 2020.
