Prince Edward Island invited 132 candidates in January

On January 20, 2022, Prince Edward Island conducted a new invitation round in the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP). In the first round of the year, the province issued 121 invitations to apply to skilled workers in the Labour Impact and Express Entry streams. PEI also invited 11 candidates to the Business Work Permit Entrepreneurs stream. The lowest score for business candidates was 72 points, 5 points more than it was in the November draw. In 2021, Prince Edward Island issued 1,854 invitations, including 157 invitations to business candidates. The next PEI PNP draw is scheduled for February 17, 2022.

African countries are more likely to face racism in a visa application

According to the “IRCC Anti-Racism Employee Focus Groups” Final Report, applicants’ country of citizenship may impact the approval of an application. The approval rate of temporary resident visas, study permits, and work permits is higher in certain countries than in others. The approval rate for the citizens of African countries has been lower than other regions for several years. the report does not deny that IRCC employees often treat applications from Africans with more scrutiny than applications from other countries.

Ottawa will continue to issue permanent residency to out-of-status construction workers

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will continue to enable out-of-status construction workers and their family members residing in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) to obtain permanent resident status. The temporary public policy for out-of-status construction workers has been extended and will expire on January 2, 2023, or once 500 principal applicants receive permanent residence (PR). In addition, under the new policy, the eligibility requirements regarding language, previous work authorization, and tax filling have been removed, making it easier for workers to apply for PR. In 2021, only 52 out-of-status construction workers obtained PR under this policy.

Immigrant wages increase due to the high level of labour shortages

Canadian employers struggling to find highly skilled employees raise wages for economic immigrants to tackle the labour shortages. The Statistics Canada report, Longitudinal Immigration Database: Immigrants’ Income Trajectories During The Initial Years Since Admission, compared the wages of immigrants, who came to Canada in 2017 and 2018 and revealed that immigrants admitted to Canada in 2018 received 4.2% higher wage than those admitted in 2017. In addition, in 2019, the median wage of economic immigrants was $43,600, which is 12.4 percent higher than the Canadian median wage.
