Canada will invest $35 million to expand settlement services for newcomers
On January 17, 2022, the Government of Canada announced an investment of more than $35 million to expand resettlement capacity and settlement services for newcomers in Canada’s small towns and rural communities. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has selected 23 projects which will provide services to help refugees and vulnerable newcomers settle and adapt to life in the country. In addition, the Government will invest $14 million on management services for 14 service providers to assist vulnerable newcomers, which also includes a pilot project aimed at bolstering Francophone case management.

Are Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot open?
As of January 17, 2022, the Government of Canada accepted more than 2,750 applications under the Home Child Care Provider Pilot, which has already been closed to new applications for 2022. The Government will return additional applications and refund paid fees. Applicants will be able to apply for this Pilot starting January 1, 2023. The Home Support Worker Pilot still receives new applications for the 2022 cap. For this year, the Government is planning to accept up to 2,750 applications for this pilot.

Canada clarified travel restrictions for immigrants’ family members
On January 17, 2022, the Government of Canada published a new program delivery update announcing changes to travel restrictions for family members of immigrants. As of January 15, 2022, many unvaccinated or partially vaccinated foreign nationals will not be allowed to enter Canada. The Government introduced new rules, terminating the exemption for immediate family members of temporary residents. The definition for extended family members of Canadian citizens, permanent residents, as well as persons registered under the Indian Act has also been amended.

Top 10 in-demand job vacancies in Alberta
According to Statistics Canada’s latest survey, the number of vacancies is increasing, pushing down the unemployment rate to 7.6% – the level it was before the start of the pandemic. This creates opportunities for foreign nationals looking to immigrate to Alberta. A high number of vacancies increase labour shortages in the province that makes employers turn to immigrants to fill those positions. The top 10 most in-demand jobs in the province are:
