IRCC updated instruction regarding duration and extensions for AIPP work permits
On January 15, 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) published a new program delivery update regarding Work Permits duration under the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP). According to the updated instruction, the duration of the work permit will now begin from the date of the decision. Should the worker need to extend the work permit, the application must include a new referral letter, issued by the provincial government. However, if the candidate has submitted a PR application within 90 days of the initial work permit, the new referral letter is not required.

Fewer immigrants getting citizenship amid the pandemic
According to the official figures by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the number of new citizens to Canada drastically decreased in 2020 due to the COVID-19 crisis. Surprisingly, 14,757 newcomers from the Philippines obtained Canadian citizenship in 2020, making up the biggest portion of new citizens, followed by 14,535 new citizens from India. The other countries in the top ten were Iran, China, Pakistan, Nigeria, the USA, Egypt, Iraq, and France.

Marco Mendicino received a Supplementary Mandate Letter
On January 15, 2021, the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau published a Supplementary Mandate Letter for Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marco Mendicino. In fact, the new letter does not add additional goals for IRCC nor clearly set the previous. The government calls IRCC to keep reaching the targets of the Immigration Levels Plan, expanding the pilot program for refugees, support expedited family reunification, and work on sectoral and regional pilot programs. The letter also mentions the PR pathway for front line health care workers and call for exploration of PR options for temporary foreign workers. Unfortunately, there are still no updates about the Municipal Nominee Program, making Atlantic Immigration Pilot permanent, or removing citizenship fees – news long expected by the public.
