New Brunswick launched a new program to retain international students in the province

On January 10, 2023, the provincial Government of New Brunswick launched the Study and Succeed in New Brunswick program, granting international students access to the resources, assistance and networking necessary for a prosperous career and content living in the province. Leveraging the accomplishments of the 2018-2021 Study and Stay pilot program in Atlantic Canada, the program aims to increase the availability of skilled labour by retaining more international students after graduation. The three-year program has been funded by a joint investment of $500,000 by Opportunities NB and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). It is expected that by the end of the program, nine cohorts of 100 international students will participate in the initiative.

Canada needs more immigrants to increase its population and solve the labour shortage issue

Recent studies by Environics revealed that a whopping 58% of Canadians believe immigration should be increased to bolster the population – compared with only 23% who held this view 30 years ago. In 1993, an astounding 77 percent of survey respondents expressed opposition to increasing Canada’s immigrant intake, indicating a tremendous shift in attitude today! A similar perspective was seen regarding the Canadian opinion that immigration levels were too high. According to Environics, poll data revealed only 27% of people wanted immigration rates reduced.

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons will fast-track the certification of healthcare professionals

In the wake of Canada’s doctor shortage and criticism regarding their policies that discriminate against non-domestic medical graduates, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons is reforming its rules to make it simpler for international physicians to work in Canadian hospitals. The college, an organization that establishes standards for medical specialists such as surgery, cardiology and emergency medicine, has come under tremendous pressure to find ways to more efficiently assess foreign-trained physicians and determine if they can take the certification exams.
