India is the top source country of newcomers to Canada

According to the new reports published by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), in 2022, around 46% of landed immigrants in Canada were from Asian countries. India remains the primary source of newcomers to Canada, accounting for over a quarter (25%) of all permanent residents in the country. Last year, 118,095 Indians landed as permanent residents – an impressive six-fold increase compared to Canada’s second-highest source country for new immigrants – China. In 2022, there were only 31,815 Chinese landed immigrants in Canada.

Canada cannot fully benefit from the skills of immigrants

The Royal Bank of Canada report reveals that Canada is the most welcoming G7 country for immigrants, accounting for 90% of population growth. Additionally, the report notes that newcomers to Canada are better educated than native-born citizens – however, they work in jobs with much lower educational requirements than their qualifications and experience. This issue, affecting many professions, is particularly daunting for those with medical science, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or optometry degrees. According to RBC’s statistical analysis results, foreign-born workers are six times more prone to find themselves working at jobs which do not require specialized training than their domestic counterparts.

Canada accepted twice more parents and grandparents in 2022

Last year, the number of family members reunited with their loved ones in Canada through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) skyrocketed – more than doubling its previous record set before the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the newest records from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), an impressive 27,195 new permanent residents arrived in Canada through the PGP last year. The PGP, which relies upon Canadian relatives sponsoring the parents and grandparents of immigrants, has been gradually rebuilding its numbers following the massive reduction in immigration due to public health protocols and travel restrictions.

If Budget 2023 passes, Alberta’s Ministry of Trade, Immigration and Multiculturalism will allocate $7 million for language and settlement services over three years. Moreover, the Ministry of Seniors, Community and Social Services will provide $20.3 million to ensure Ukrainian evacuees access housing support and financial assistance.
