Atlantic Immigration Pilot became permanent

On December 17, 2021, the Government of Canada announced that the Atlantic Immigration Pilot became permanent. The Pilot launched in 2017 has brought over 10,000 new permanent residents to Atlantic Canada and helped communities thrive and prosper, and contributed to the region’s population growth. The permanent Atlantic Immigration Program will officially open on January 1, 2022, and attract skilled workers to address economic and demographic challenges, as well as the labour shortage in the region. Eligible candidates will be able to submit applications for permanent residence (PR) under the new program on March 6, 2022.

British Columbia will issue the final invitations in the week of December 20, 2021

On December 17, 2021, the Government of British Columbia announced that the province is going to issue the final invitations for 2021 in the week of December 20, 2021. The next round of invitations will be issued in January 2022. In 2021, issued 11,400 ITAs to apply for a provincial nomination under all programs, including 1,905 candidates in the BCPNP Tech as well as 70 entrepreneurs in the Base Category of the Entrepreneur Stream. The province advised applicants who have any questions to contact the BC PNP at PNPInfo@gov.bc.ca.

New Permanent Atlantic Immigration Program will have a new requirement

On December 17, 2021, Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, joined Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), to announce the new permanent Atlantic Immigration Program, also introducing the new requirement for employers. Employers will have to complete virtual and free of charge intercultural competency training during the on-boarding process to better understand cultural dynamics in the workplace and create welcoming workspaces for newcomers. Employers who want to become designated employers under the new program will have to start the designation process in winter 2022.

Canada lifts the travel ban for South African countries

On December 17, 2021, the Government of Canada lifted the travel ban for South African countries that had been cancelled in late November due to the spread of a new variant of the COVID-19 virus. As of December 18, 2021, at 11:59 PM (EST) the temporary requirements have been terminated for travellers who have been in Botswana, Egypt, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. In addition, as of December 21, 2021, the Government will also require all Canadians returning from short trips to take a molecular pre-entry test.
