Canada welcomed a record number of immigrants in the first half of 2022

Although a backlog of over 2.4 million applications, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), claims that it has already welcomed record-breaking numbers of new permanent residents between January 1 and July 31, 2022. At the same time, 349,000 new work permits were granted, including 220,000 open work permits. The number of study permit applications is also up by 31 percent for 2022. According to IRCC, 54% of applications in the backlog have not met service standards due to worldwide humanitarian crises such as Afghanistan and Ukraine’s ongoing conflict.

Canada continues to welcome Ukrainians under the CUAET

On August 26, 2022, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated the number of Ukrainian newcomers arriving in Canada under the Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel (CUAET). According to the latest update, between January 1 and August 21, 2022, 12,243 Ukrainians arrived in Canada by land, and an additional 64,911 arrived by air. Between March 17 and August 24, 2022, IRCC received 514,689 applications under the CUAET. The applications of 216,034 Ukrainian nationals have been approved so far.

IRCC accepted a new batch of Afghan refugees

On August 26, 2022, the Government of Canada made a new update regarding the Afghan refugees arriving in the country. According to the last update, Canada has accepted 65 more Afghan refugees since August 19, 2022. As of now, Canada has welcomed a total of 17,655 Afghan refugees. The Government of Canada aimed to bring at least 40,000 Afghan nationals to Canada through special programs for Afghan refugees, as well as via the special immigration program for Afghan nationals who assisted Canadian forces in Afghanistan.

Canada has seen more than 1 million job vacancies for the third consecutive month

According to Statistics Canada’s Payroll Employment, Earnings and Hours, and Job Vacancies report for June 2022, the number of people employed in paid positions stayed above one million for the third month in a row. The number of vacant jobs in Canada increased by 3.2 percent in June, with 32,200 more positions available than the previous month. This means that there were 1,037,900 open positions for employers to fill. In June, the total number of available and filled labour positions hit an all-time high of nearly 17.7 million-an increase of 1.4% or 238,700 jobs more than in May.
