Canada launched a new program to boost Francophone immigration

Canada is intensifying efforts to welcome French-speaking international students and immigrants to enrich Francophone minority communities’ linguistic, social, cultural, and economic fabric. On August 26, 2024, the Francophone Minority Communities Student Pilot (FMCSP) program will commence in partnership with designated French-language and bilingual post-secondary institutions. Announced by Minister Marc Miller during the Acadian World Congress, this initiative aims to improve study permit approval rates and attract international students from Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. The program offers a direct pathway from temporary to permanent status and access to settlement services, significantly benefiting these communities.

Canada experiences surge in entrepreneur immigration via start-up visa

In 2024, Canada welcomed over 3,000 newcomers through its Start-Up Visa (SUV) program, significantly surpassing last year’s figures. The latest Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data shows a consistent influx of new permanent residents, with 560 arrivals in both May and June. This brings the mid-year total to 3,010, marking a 785.3% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The SUV program, which targets international entrepreneurs, saw notable gains in British Columbia despite declines in other provinces. The SUV’s rising popularity suggests Canada might see 6,020 new entrepreneurial immigrants by year-end.

Canada’s stable employment sets the stage for potential interest rate reductions

Canada’s employment landscape remained relatively stable in July, witnessing a minor reduction of 2,800 jobs and an unemployment rate of 6.4%. This steadiness may prompt the Bank of Canada to consider further interest rate cuts. Chief Economist Douglas Porter highlighted that employment growth has stagnated over the past two months, with the jobless rate nearly a percentage point higher than the previous year. Despite a challenging student job market and a minor decrease in the employment rate to 60.9%, sectoral shifts were evident, with notable declines in wholesale, retail trade, and finance sectors.
