Ontario has updated application processing times in the OINP
On August 12, 2021, Ontario has updated the average processing time in the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). As of now, the processing time in Ontario’s Express Entry French-Speaking Skilled Worker Stream, Express Entry Human Capital Priorities Stream, Express Entry Skilled Trades Stream, Master Graduates Stream, Employer Job Offer Foreign Worker and Employer Job Offer International Student Stream is 30-60 days. For Ontario’s Ph.D. Graduates Stream the processing time is 60-90 days. The processing time for applications in the Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills Stream is 90-120 days. The Expression of Interest (EOI) Assessment in the Entrepreneur Stream requires less than 30 days, while the application processing depends on the complexity of the business nomination application.

Canada extended immigration agreement with Newfoundland and Labrador
On August 12, 2021, the Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador extended the immigration agreement that was first signed in 2016. This agreement will be in effect until July 31, 2022, and allow the provincial government to nominate candidates who meet both federal and provincial immigration objectives. This year, Newfoundland and Labrador issued permanent residency (PR) to 275 employees and 300 of their family members as well as 400 individuals in the health care sector through the Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIP) and Provincial Nominee Program.

OINP nominated 6,411 foreign nationals to apply for PR in 2021
On August 12, 2021, the government of Ontario released a new update on the issuance of nomination certificates under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). From January 1 to August 12, Ontario has issued nominations to 6,411 foreign nationals, 529 nominations more compared to the previous update on July 8. In 2020, the province invited 16,976 candidates and issued nominations to 8,050 main applicants, including 7,249 spouses and dependent children. This year, the Federal government allocated 8,350 spots to Ontario, as well as extra 250 nominations for temporary foreign workers in intermediate skilled occupations (NOC C).

The Government of Canada invested $100 million to help newcomers integrate
On August 12, 2021, the Government of Canada announced an investment of $100 million over the next 3 years to support newcomers’ integration and improve settlement services. Funding will begin in the fall of 2021 and continue until March 31, 2024. Service delivery improvement (SDI) projects have centred on developing innovative approaches to support the settlement and integration of newcomers since 2017. An SDI expression of interest process is usually run every 3 years and projects are also funded for up to 3 years. During the last SDI funding process that ran from 2020 to 2021, 78 projects have been selected.

Quebec launched a new self-assessment tool for Regular Skilled Worker Program
On August 12, 2021, the Ministere de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Integration (MIFI) announced a new self-assessment tool that will allow applicants to estimate the score they could obtain when filing an expression of interest (EOI) in Arrima under the Regular Skilled Worker Program. This tool will help compare applicants’ scores with the results of previous exercises and estimate the chances of receiving an invitation in the permanent selection application. Applicants can gain scores for several criteria, particularly, for the level and field of education, the presence of a spouse accompanying the principal applicant; proficiency in French, recognized by the Ministry; and work experience.
