Manitoba issued over 600 nominations through the MPNP
On July 27, 2023, Manitoba held a new invitation round in the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP). In round #187, the MPNP held a new occupation-specific candidate selection under the Skilled Workers in Manitoba (SWM) stream and invited 335 applicants who scored 614 points and above. Manitoba also issued 202 LAAs in the regular SWM draw. The minimum score for the LAA in this category was 649 points, 12 points fewer than the previous draw. In the Skilled Workers Overseas stream, MPNP issued 21 LAAs to candidates invited under the Strategic Recruitment Initiative. The lowest score in the SWO category was 717 points, 57 points fewer than in the previous draw. In addition, 51 invitations were issued in the International Education Stream. Manitoba has issued LAAs to 609 candidates, including 106 Express Entry candidates for this round. In 2023, MPNP invited 9,063 candidates, and 2,466 of them received invitations in the Express Entry.

Ontario updated the average application processing times for the OINP
On July 25, 2023, Ontario updated the average processing time in the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). Currently, the processing time for Ontario’s Express Entry Human Capital Priorities Stream and Express Entry Skilled Trades Stream is 70-100 days. Processing times for Ontario’s Express Entry French-Speaking Skilled Worker Stream, Master’s Graduates and Ph.D. Graduates Streams, Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills Stream, Employer Job Offer: Foreign Worker, and Employer Job Offer: International Student Stream is 90-120 days. The processing time for Ontario’s Expression of Interest (EOI) Assessment in the Entrepreneur Stream still requires less than 30 days, and the application processing depends on the complexity of the business nomination application.

Sudbury considered 54 new applications under the RNIP
On July 31, 2023, the City of Greater Sudbury held a new round of invitations in the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP). In this round, Sudbury considered 54 candidates, including one drawn through the Francophone Stream. The lowest score of these draws was 240 points, ten points lower than in the previous draw. Last year, Sudbury invited a total of 154 applicants. Since the program’s launch, the city has recommended at least 400 individuals under the RNIP. So far, the city has considered 230 candidates in 2023.

Canada’s new Housing and Infrastructure Minister says Canada needs more immigrants to deal with the housing issue
Housing affordability is a prominent political issue in Canada, with the ruling Liberals and their main political opponents, the Conservatives, differing opinions on the rising cost of homes. Canada’s former Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, now the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, has defended the country’s high immigration levels, stating that new immigrants help developers find the workers needed to build more homes, ultimately making housing more affordable. He urged caution to those who believe closing the door on newcomers is the answer to the housing challenges. Developers face difficulties completing their projects due to the lack of labour force, which can be resolved by increasing immigration levels. According to Statistics Canada’s new Housing Price Index report, new home prices have softened in 20 of the 27 cities year over year in June 2023, with home prices going down 0.7 percent yearly.
