Prince Edward Island invited 189 candidates in April
On April 20, 2023, Prince Edward Island conducted a new invitation round in the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP). In the sixth round of this year, the province issued 180 invitations to apply to skilled workers in the Labour Impact and Express Entry streams. PEI also invited nine candidates to the Business Work Permit Entrepreneurs stream. The lowest score for business candidates was 72 points, 20 points more than in the March draw. This year, PEI invited 943 candidates. According to the schedule, the next PEI PNP draw will occur on May 4, 2023.

Volkswagen to create new jobs in Canada
On April 21, 2023, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a new Volkswagen plant expected to create 3,000 direct and up to 30,000 indirect jobs. Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo, a Volkswagen company that produces batteries for electric vehicles, stated that the factory would become the world’s largest Volkswagen plant. Volkswagen, the largest carmaker in Europe, recently invested significantly in Ontario and Canada. The company invests $7 billion in St. Thomas, Ontario, to create its first electric car battery production factory abroad.

Canadian employers recruit foreign tech workers to deal with the labour shortages
Canadian employers are increasingly looking for international candidates to fill tech positions due to a shortage of qualified candidates. This presents opportunities for foreign nationals who wish to immigrate to Canada through the Express Entry system. According to the Federal Government’s Job Bank website, job prospects in this sector are rated as “good” to “very good” across the country over the next three years. In 2022, the average salary for certain positions ranged from $51,900 to $154,300, with some positions paying even higher. For 2023, salary expectations have slightly changed, with the average range now at $74,000 to $130,600 and a median salary of $100,100.

Foreign-born Canadians struggle to pass Canadian citizenship to their children born outside Canada
In court, government lawyers were asked to explain the reasoning behind the available options for lost Canadians to obtain citizenship and the difficulties faced by families affected by the rule that restricts the transmission of citizenship rights by descent for those born outside of the country. The counsel for the federal government has argued that there is no constitutional right to citizenship and that alternative pathways exist for children born outside Canada to Canadian citizens who are foreign-born and cannot inherit citizenship due to the second-generation cut-off rule. To pass on citizenship for the first generation born abroad, the only requirement is to have a child born in Canada to maintain a connection to the country.
