Canada celebrates national Francophone immigration week

Immigration Minister Marc Miller launched the 12th National Francophone Immigration Week. The event celebrates the contributions of Francophone newcomers to Canada’s culture and economy. In 2023, Canada exceeded its targets with 19,700 French-speaking permanent residents outside Quebec. The government aims to increase this to 6% in 2024. Recent initiatives, including the Policy on Francophone Immigration and the 2025-2027 Immigration Levels Plan, demonstrate Canada’s commitment to fostering Francophone minority communities. Targets are set to reach 10% of permanent French-speaking residents outside Quebec by 2027, supporting preserving Francophone heritage and cultural integration.

Ontario closed the Entrepreneur stream

The Ontario government has announced the termination of the Entrepreneur Stream within the Ontario Immigration Nominee Program (OINP) following a suspension of applications initiated in December 2023. All pending applications will be processed in accordance with the newly updated guidelines. It is important to note that current applicants may retain their eligibility for permanent residence nomination, contingent upon their existing business commitments within Ontario. The provincial authorities will promptly communicate with all applicants and their designated representatives to provide comprehensive information and outline the subsequent steps regarding their respective applications.

Canada’s international education sector grapples with new immigration policies

A recent survey reveals widespread disapproval among Canadian colleges and universities regarding new immigration policies affecting international students. Nearly 90% of institutions report negative impacts, citing operational revenue losses and recruitment challenges. The survey, conducted in September 2024, highlights a significant disconnect between the government and education stakeholders, with 81% rating government engagement as poor. In response, IDP has launched a campaign titled “There’s a future in Canada for you” to showcase positive student experiences and maintain Canada’s appeal as an education destination.
