Statistics Canada predicted a 21 million population growth

According to various scenarios projected by Statistics Canada, the population of Canada could increase by about 21 million over the next 50 years, potentially 63 million by 2073. This growth is expected despite Canada’s natural population aging, which is projected to increase the average age to between 42.6 and 50.1 years by 2073. The growth rate is forecasted to slow down from an average of 1.12% over the last 30 years to 0.79% in 2073 due to low fertility rates and decreasing life expectancy. Immigration is identified as a key strategy in combating these trends, contributing significantly to Canada’s labour force growth and demographic balance.

Alberta sees highest population increase in Canada

Despite a slower start in 2024, Alberta is leading in population growth through interprovincial migration in Canada. Although the number of migrants to the province in Q1 of 2024 was 8.9% lower than in 2023, Alberta still saw a net gain of 12,482, making it one of only three provinces to see such an increase. This marks Alberta’s 11th consecutive quarter of net gains, a significant change after losses in 19 out of 24 quarters from Q3 2015 to Q2 2021. The main contributors to Alberta’s net gain were people moving from Ontario and British Columbia.

Canada prepares for possible evacuation of citizens from Lebanon

Amid escalating tensions and fears of war between Israel and Hezbollah, Canada is reportedly planning to evacuate approximately 45,000 of its citizens from Lebanon. This news follows a reported conversation between Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz and his Canadian counterpart Mélanie Joly, during which Joly indicated that Canadian military forces have already been dispatched to the region in anticipation of what could be the country’s largest ever evacuation. Whether similar plans are being considered for the approximately 35,000 Canadian citizens residing in Israel remains unclear.
