The Immigration Minister announced new measures to strengthen Canada’s immigration system

On October 31, 2023, Immigration Minister Marc Miller presented the report “An Immigration System for Canada’s Future.” This report outlines plans to bolster Canada’s immigration system to support economic growth and keep Canada appealing. The report suggests several enhancements, such as responding faster to global crises, introducing a new Francophone Immigration Policy, and improving the International Student Program. It also advocates for including services like housing and healthcare in immigration planning. The report even proposes the establishment of a Chief International Talent Officer position and a more user-friendly immigration website.

Public support for immigration declines significantly due to affordability concerns

Public support for immigration in Canada has dropped significantly in the past year due to affordability and housing concerns linked to a surge in newcomers, reveals a survey by the Environics Institute for Survey Research and Century Initiative. The poll shows a rise from 27% to 44% of Canadians thinking immigration levels are too high. This is the most enormous opinion shift Environics saw in over four decades of polling. A year ago, immigration support was at its peak. However, economic worries such as high inflation, increasing interest payments, and a severe housing crisis have since prevailed.
