Ottawa published new PRRA instructions for Uganda

On May 12, 2023, the Government of Canada announced that Ugandans who were denied asylum or protection between May 13, 2022, and May 12, 2023, may qualify for a pre-removal risk assessment (PRRA). The Canada Border Services Agency will contact eligible individuals about applying for a PRRA if they face an enforceable removal order. Generally, refugees and PRRA applicants must wait 12 months before reapplying if their claim was rejected, abandoned, or withdrawn. However, worsening conditions in Uganda may put some individuals at risk if they return, so some Ugandans are exempt from the 12-month rule depending on their refugee claim decision. After May 12, 2023, Ugandans who receive a final negative decision must wait 12 months before applying for a PRRA.
