Canada is actively recruiting internationally trained nurses and other healthcare professionals

Healthcare authorities recruited overseas to address a severe labour shortage last year, resulting in increased immigration from internationally-trained nurses, orderlies, and other healthcare workers. According to the latest data, 2,595 new permanent residents came to fill healthcare openings through the Express Entry system last year, up 28.1% from 2,025 the previous year. Last year, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) made nurse aides and orderlies eligible for the Express Entry Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program, as demand was very high for these highly-skilled workers.

Islamophobia is still widespread in Canada

According to early findings from a Senate committee studying the issue, Islamophobia and violence against Muslims are deeply ingrained in Canadian society. The most vulnerable are Muslim women who wear hijabs, particularly Black Muslim women. The Committee on human rights found that addressing Islamophobia in various public spheres is challenging. Statistics Canada recently released figures that revealed police-reported hate crimes targeting Muslims increased by 71% from 2020 to 2021. Based on census figures, the rate of these crimes was eight incidents per 100,000 members of the Muslim population.
