British Columbia invited more candidates through the BCPNP draws

On April 18, 2023, the Government of British Columbia issued new invitations under the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP) and invited qualified Skills Immigration candidates. In the general draw, the province invited 158 candidates. The minimum score for candidates invited in this draw was 85-107 points. The province issued 29 ITAs to candidates under the childcare-targeted draw for early childhood educators (NOC 42202). In the Healthcare-targeted draw, BC invited 16 candidates who scored 60 points. In addition, the province invited fewer than five candidates working in other priority occupations. In total, the province issued up to 208 ITAs in this draw. This year, British Columbia has already invited 3,536 candidates.

IRCC approved 665,777 applications from Ukrainian nationals under the CUAET

On April 18, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated the number of Ukrainian newcomers arriving in Canada under the Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel (CUAET). According to the latest update, between January 1, 2022, and April 9, 2023, 27,172 Ukrainians arrived in Canada by land, and 181,621 Ukrainians reached by air. Between March 17, 2022, and April 8, 2023, IRCC received 995,453 applications under the CUAET. In total, IRCC has approved 665,777 applications from Ukrainian nationals.

Canada welcomed more Afghan refugees

On April 18, 2023, the Government of Canada made a new update regarding the Afghan refugees arriving in the country. The last update shows that Canada has accepted 175 Afghan refugees since April 12, 2023. As of now, Canada has welcomed a total of 30,455 Afghan refugees. Canada received 18,215 Afghans and their families’ applications under the Special Immigration Measures Program for Afghans who had assisted the Government of Canada in Afghanistan. 10,060 Afghans arrived in Canada under that program, and 16,010 Afghan nationals came under the Humanitarian program. In addition, Canada admitted 1,440 applicants under the pathway for extended family members of former interpreters.

Ottawa updated immigration inventories and backlogs

On April 18, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated the data on immigration inventories and backlogs. According to the last update, there were 2,017,700 applications for permanent residence, temporary residence and citizenship approvals in all IRCC inventories. According to the update, 44.4% of applications in the inventory exceeded service standards. IRCC is dedicated to processing 80% of applications within their service standard, though some complex cases may require a comprehensive assessment. Currently, 46% of temporary residence requests – including ones for visiting, studying, or working abroad and 51% of permanent residency applications are in backlog. Additionally, 25% of citizenship applications are also exceeding service standards.
