Thunder Bay published an update regarding the 2023 RNIP
Thunder Bay published an important program update for the 2023 Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) intake. Within the first three months of the year, Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) received over 200 applications – more than half of the 2023 allotment. As a result, from April 12 to May 8, 2023, the city will reopen the candidate application form, enabling candidates to apply for a recommendation this year. Since the introduction of the RNIP in November 2019, Thunder Bay CEDC has recommended a total of 377 candidates for permanent residence under the RNIP.

Immigration to Canada has increased by 40% in 2023
According to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data, immigration to Canada increased by nearly 40% in the first two months of 2023 compared to the same period last year. Canada admitted 100,430 new permanent residents in January and February 2023 – a dramatic increase from 72,815 permanent residents accepted in the first two months of 2022. This increase shows that if this trend continues throughout the rest of 2023, it will be a record year for immigration to Canada.

Tech workers prefer to immigrate to Canada over the US
Tech workers struggling to obtain a work permit in the US change their direction to Canada. Highly skilled tech workers prefer Canada over the US as they can apply for permanent residency in this country and are free to change jobs and work for any Canadian employer. US’s H1-B visa application process usually takes longer and requires four applications to be completed. While the US issues 85,000 visas for most occupations and rejects almost the same number of applications, Canada accepts skilled workers through Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP).

In addition, the employment rate of 25 to 54 years old core-aged Black Canadians climbed to 79.9 percent in March compared to 78.6 percent in 2022. The increase in employment was mainly seen in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and Prince Edward Island.
