British Columbia invited up to 237 candidates to the new BCPNP draw
On February 14, 2023, British Columbia issued new invitations in the Skilled Worker – International Graduate categories of the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP). In the Tech-targeted draw, BC issued 183 invitations with a minimum score of 83 points. In the Childcare-targeted draw for early childhood educators (NOC 42202), the province invited 29 candidates who scored 55 points. In the Healthcare-targeted draw, the province issued 20 invitations. Additionally, fewer than 5 invitations have been issued for other priority occupations (NOCs 31103, 32104). The province invited up to 237 candidates with a score of 55-83 points. Including this draw, in 2023, British Columbia has already issued 1,604 invitations.

Alberta updated the AAIP inventory
On February 14, 2023, Alberta published the update considering the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) inventory. According to the new update, there were around 1,310 Alberta Opportunity Stream applications and 430 Expressions of Interest in the Alberta Express Entry pool. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) allocated a quota of 6,500 nominations to Alberta in 2022 under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP), and the AAIP issued all 6,500 certificates last year. For 2023, IRCC has not still announced nomination allocations for the AAIP. This year, Alberta invited 200 candidates.

Asylum seekers continue to come to Canada through the irregular border crossings
Asylum seekers still use Roxham Road to enter Canada illegally. Many use the taxi service from a gas station bus stop in Plattsburgh, US, to the Canadian border. Last week, reports unveiled that New York City officials were supplying free bus tickets to migrants on their journey northwards in search of asylum in Canada. Eric Adams, Mayor of NYC, proclaimed that his administration is aiding with the “re-ticketing process” for those who arrive but are eager to go elsewhere. In December, the number of migrants that crossed into Canada through Quebec’s Roxham Road totalled 4,689 – a far higher figure when compared to all those who entered as refugees in 2021.

Immigration Minister is working on a solution to help those with expiring PGWPs
On February 6, 2023, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), confessed that he has not yet found a perfect solution for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) extension policy; however, he is actively seeking and working on one. International students whose post-graduate work permits (PGWPs) are expiring or have already expired are stuck in limbo, with no news on extensions or a dedicated Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draw yet. Though it is expected that we will witness a CEC exclusive draw within the next few weeks, the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cut-off remains much higher than pre-pandemic standards. Thus, they must either depart from Canada shortly after their work permit statuses expire or choose alternate methods to extend their stay legally.
