Canadians worry about the current immigration levels
Herbert Grubel, an immigrant to Canada and professor of economics at Simon Fraser University, argues that Canadians increasingly worry about the current immigration levels. According to Grubel, almost half of the population believes that 500,000 immigrants per year are too much for Canada, and 75% of people are worried about potential housing shortages and the extra demand for social services due to this new plan. In addition, despite many Canadians welcoming immigrants and appreciating their benefit to the economy, they believe the housing market in Canada can only absorb much higher prices.

IRCC processes almost half of the applications within the service standard
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) revealed an accumulation of 2.1 million applications for permanent residence, temporary residence permit and citizenship approvals – with 1.09 million exceeding the specified service standards. IRCC is devoted to providing 80% of applications within the service standard, while 20% may require more time as complex cases need further assessment. Currently, 56% of temporary residence requests – including ones for visiting, studying or working abroad and 55% of permanent residency applications have exceeded the established service standards.

The Internal IRCC audit suggested creating more precise guidelines for pilot programs
On July 18, 2022, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) released an internal memo recommending the development of explicit pilot program guidelines in response to the thorough audit conducted by the Internal Audit and Accountability Branch in March 2022. Since April 2013, the Government of Canada has established eleven pilot programs. One of these programs has become permanent, three are in the process of transforming into permanent programs, and another three have been replaced or redesigned. Currently, Canada has only four active pilots.

An accumulation of immigration cases has sparked a dramatic surge in legal action against the Federal Government
The federal government is grappling with many lawsuits concerning its backlogged immigration applications, which has caused immense delays in processing and led to significant dissatisfaction for those stuck waiting for years for an answer. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has been the subject of an incredible 709 mandamus applications in federal court since April 2022 – a sharp rise compared to last year’s figures. Hundreds of people are desperately searching for a legal mandate, known as mandamus, that requires IRCC to process their applications expeditiously. Such an order would come from the court and direct lower courts or government entities to perform their required duties.
