Canada will invest $90m in credential recognition of immigrant healthcare workers

On December 5, 2022, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced that Canada would invest up to $90 million in projects designed to help foreign-educated immigrants obtain credential recognition. The minister launched a call for proposals for these initiatives, each of which could receive between $500,000 and $10 million. Canada is facing an extreme shortage of well-trained medical personnel such as doctors, nurses, paramedics and therapists. According to a study by Statistics Canada two years ago, many newcomers who possess the necessary skills for these positions are unemployed or working below their skill level in non-healthcare jobs that only require a high school education.
