Canada updated instructions for off-campus work hours public policy
On November 30, 2022, the Government of Canada introduced updated instructions for the off-campus work hours public policy. The new public policy announced on October 7, 2022, permits certain students to work off campus more than 20 hours per week during an academic session if IRCC received their study permit application on or before October 7, 2022. This public policy exempts full-time international students who are eligible and do not have a work permit from the requirement of working no more than 20 hours off campus per week during regular academic sessions.

IRCC announced Canada’s Indo-Pacific investment strategy
On November 30, 2022, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), announced plans for Canada’s growth and prosperity under the Indo-Pacific Strategy. An investment of $74.6 million over five years and $15.7 million ongoing will improve Canada’s application processing ability domestically and in the Indo-Pacific region, which New Delhi, Chandigarh, Islamabad and Manila are all a part of. These new resources aim to bring more people to Canada faster, whether for a visit, study, work, or immigration purposes. With this addition, we can expect quicker processing times and a higher volume of visa applications from the region. Consequently, this will contribute to improved processing times and support people-to-people ties.

Ottawa to change the current points-based selection system
There is currently a labour and skills shortage in Canada, and the points-based selection system for Express Entry programs is being upgraded to address this issue. Changes to the process will be made next year to keep Canada’s immigration system responsive and the economy on track. It is unclear how the selection tools will change, but the system will adapt to meet severe labour shortages in areas like healthcare and construction. The current selection process for Immigrant workers accepts those who often work below their actual education, skill levels and abilities, which leaves Canadian employers struggling to find qualified employees for many positions.
