Canada opened a new pathway for permanent residence for families of victims of two air disasters
On August 3, 2022, the Government of Canada announced a new pathway for permanent residence for family members of the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 (ET302) and Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 (PS752) who are outside of Canada and want to come to Canada to support their families who lost their spouse, common-law partner or parent. To ensure that extended family members are connected to the surviving family member, the person who is residing in Canada must submit a statutory declaration identifying the extended family member. The public policy will be in effect until August 2, 2023.

Alberta invited 120 more candidates under the AAIP
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) determines the number of nominations the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) can issue each year. IRCC provided 6,500 nomination certificates to Alberta for 2022. This year, Alberta has issued only 3,877 nomination certificates so far. As of August 2, 2022, there are around 1,150 Alberta Opportunity Stream applications and 400 Expressions of Interest in the Alberta Express Entry pool. In addition, on July 29, 2022, Alberta held a new round in the Alberta Express Entry Stream and issued 120 Notifications of Interest (NOI). The lowest score in this round was 473 points, 67 points more than in the previous draw. In 2022, AAIP already invited 2,320 Express Entry candidates to apply for a provincial nomination in the Alberta Express Entry.

New Brunswick simplified the driver’s licence certification process for Ukrainian newcomers
On August 3, 2022, the Government of New Brunswick announced that the province has introduced the exchange process of a Ukrainian driver’s licence for a provincial one. The provincial government is now allowing Ukrainian settlers with a Ukrainian driver’s license to apply for Class 5 passenger vehicle permits. With an A Class 5 licence, Ukrainian newcomers will be able to drive most of the two-axle and three-axle motor vehicles. Drivers will be exempt from knowledge and road tests. However, those with under two years of experience will be subject to graduated driver’s licence rules.

IRCC invited 2,000 candidates under the all-program Express Entry draw
On August 3, 2022, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issued 2,000 Invitations to Apply (ITA) to candidates under Express Entry. In this round of invitations, no program has been specified. In round #228, the cut-off score was 533 points, 9 points fewer compared to the previous draw. The tie-breaking rule for this round was January 6, 2022, at 14:29:50 UTC. As of August 2, 2022, there are 238,924 profiles registered in the Express Entry pool, 708 fewer compared to the previous update. In 2022, Canada issued 16,038 ITAs through Express Entry.
