Canada had over million vacancies in May 2022

On July 28, 2022, Statistics Canada introduced new statistics about the labour market condition in early May. Employers in Canada were actively looking to hire just over one million people (1,005,700) across all industries. This is up 42.5% (+300,100) from May 2021. Seasonal fluctuations have been removed from new data from Statistics Canada, which indicate that job openings rose gradually until December 2021 before staying consistent in recent months. The job vacancy rate remained at 5.8 percent for the second month in a row in May, but it was up 4.4 percent from a year earlier.

WES introduced a report about the internationally educated health professionals in Canada

World Education Services introduced a policy brief about the underemployed healthcare professionals in Canada to help researchers and policymakers understand the extent of skill underutilization of internationally educated health professionals (IEHP). According to Statistics Canada, as of 2020, nearly half (47 percent) of all IEHPs in Canada were unemployed or underemployed. As countries around the world fight COVID-19, the policy brief recommends the Canadian Government make sure there are enough qualified healthcare providers in sufficient quantities to meet Canada’s demands.

Canadian immigration officials face increased numbers of study permit applications

The number of active study permits in Canada has now surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with application volumes increasing even faster. This year’s surge in application volumes has resulted in a processing backlog, as well as lengthy processing times for study permit files. The report of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration has made several sweeping recommendations for Canada’s immigration policy, including ones for more government supervision of education agents and greater transparency in study permit processing at the hands of the country’s immigration ministry.

IRCC added new questions for the Express Entry profile

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has added three additional questions to the language and education section of the Express Entry profile. The first question asks if the applicant completed at least 50 percent of the study courses through in-person learning. The second one asks the applicant if he or she studied in Canada for at least eight months to earn a degree, diploma, or certificate. The last question asks if this education has been completed full-time or part-time.
