Canadian businesses help Afghan newcomers with employment
On May 13, 2022, the Government of Canada announced that Canadian businesses demonstrated incredible leadership in hiring Afghan newcomers. Businesses across Canada provided employment for Afghans, and help them be financially independent, and eased Canada’s labour shortages. In addition, McCain Foods/Day & Ross, Maple Leaf Foods, Commissionaires, and Amazon/Amazon Web Services have identified positions open to Afghan refugees in many cities across Canada, such as Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, and Halifax. Moreover, on Prince Edward Island, the Immigrant & Refugee Services Association Prince Edward Island (IRSA PEI) started to help refugees who want to live in smaller communities settle across the province.

Nova Scotia announced research support for Ukrainian students and researchers
Nova Scotia has announced research support for students and academics fleeing Ukraine. The Ukrainian Emergency Research Support Program will provide funding to undergrad, grad, and postdoctoral students and researchers who are accepted by a Nova Scotian institution to continue their studies and research in Canada. The scholarships are offered by the province of Nova Scotia to offset some of the expenses associated with equipping offices and labs, leasing or sharing equipment, and integrating visiting Ukrainians into a Nova Scotian education system.

Quebec ensures the rights of temporary foreign workers in the province
Inspectors are visiting workplaces throughout Quebec to ensure that temporary foreign workers are safe and healthy, targeting six main sectors of the economy. According to provincial Immigration Minister Jean Boulet, “with the relaxation of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, the government of Quebec needed to improve the health and safety resources available to temporary foreign workers and their employers.” These health and safety inspections will help raise awareness in workplaces about the rights and obligations of workers and their employers and help foreign workers know their rights.

Canada continues to accept Afghan refugees
On May 13, 2022, the Government of Canada made a new update regarding the Afghan refugees in the country. As of now, Canada has welcomed a total of 13,050 Afghan refugees. The Canadian Government aimed to bring at least 40,000 Afghan nationals to Canada. Through the special programs for Afghan refugees, the Government is planning to resettle 5,000 Afghan refugees through the permanent residence pathway for extended family members of former interpreters, 18,000 Afghan nationals through the special immigration program for Afghan nationals who assisted Canadian forces in Afghanistan, and a mix of government-assisted and privately-sponsored Afghan refugees through the humanitarian program.
