Alberta invited 400 candidates and updated the AAIP inventory

On February 17, 2022, Alberta published the update of the inventory of the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). There were around 350 Alberta Opportunity Stream applications and 775 Expressions of Interest in the Alberta Express Entry pool. In addition, on February 1, 2022, Alberta held a new round in the Alberta Express Entry Stream and issued 400 Notifications of Interest (NOI). The lowest score in this round was 340 points, 6 points fewer than it was in the previous draw. Last year, AINP invited 6,608 Express Entry candidates to apply for a provincial nomination in the Alberta Express Entry. In 2022, Alberta has already invited 1000 candidates.

Ottawa updated instructions regarding the designated learning institutions

On February 18, 2022, the Government of Canada updated instructions regarding the designated learning institutions (DLIs). According to the new guidelines, transitional provisions from June 1, 2014, no longer apply and have been removed. As of now, study permits will be issued to only those applicants who have been accepted to an educational institution that is designated to host international students. The Government also provided links and instructions for identifying DLIs with clearer instructions. The new amendments will not affect the current COVID-19 measures in place.

Prince Edward Island invited 123 candidates in February 2022

On February 17, 2022, Prince Edward Island conducted a new invitation round in the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP). In the second round of the year, the province issued 117 invitations to apply to skilled workers in the Labour Impact and Express Entry streams. PEI also invited 6 candidates to the Business Work Permit Entrepreneurs stream. The lowest score for business candidates was 67 points, 5 points fewer than it was in the January draw. In 2021, Prince Edward Island issued 1,854 invitations, including 157 invitations to business candidates. This year, PEI invited 255 candidates. The next PEI PNP draw is scheduled for March 17, 2022.

Canada invited 7,958 candidates under the International Experience Canada

Over the last week, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held new draws in the pools of International Experience Canada (IEC). From February 14 to February 20, Canada invited 7,958 young foreigners to apply for an IEC open work permit. As of February 18, there are 30,147 candidates registered in the pool, waiting for the invitation. In this round, there were 146 ITAs for Australia, 170 ITAs for Belgium, 304 ITAs for Chile, 28 ITAs for Costa Rica, 7 ITAs for Croatia, 98 ITAs for the Czech Republic, 22 ITAs for Denmark, 1 ITA for Estonia, 1,442 ITAs for France, 689 ITAs for Germany, 63 ITAs for Greece, 8 ITAs for Hong Kong, 1,496 ITAs for Ireland, 195 ITAs for Italy, 259 ITAs for Japan, 799 ITAs for South Korea, 15 ITAs for Latvia, 60 ITAs for Lithuania, 60 ITAs for the Netherlands, 56 ITAs for New Zealand, 106 ITAs for Poland, 39 ITAs for Portugal, 193 ITAs for Slovakia, 3 ITAs for Slovenia, 254 ITAs for Spain, 15 ITAs for Sweden, 5 ITAs for Switzerland, 255 ITAs for Taiwan, and 1,170 ITAs for the United Kingdom. In 2022, Canada issued 35,288 ITAs under the IEC Program.

Canada keeps accepting Afghan refugees

On February 18, 2022, the Government of Canada published a new report regarding the arrival of Afghan refugees. Over the past week, Canadian cities welcomed 335 government-assisted and privately-sponsored Afghan refugees who arrived in Canada on 10 commercial flights. These refugees will be resettled in communities all across Canada, including in cities such as Calgary, Winnipeg, and Sherbrooke. To date, Canada has accepted a total of 7,885 Afghan nationals under the special immigration program for Afghans who assisted the Government of Canada.
